Every year the Congressional Black Caucus takes over DC during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference. From receptions to social mixers, CBC Week is filled with so many events that it’s hard to choose which ones to attend. This year I kept it a bit low key, popping into a few mixers and networking events. But there was one event that I couldn’t miss. The Inaugural Congressional Black Caucus Closing Brunch presented by Let’s Do Brunch NYC, Digital Divas and DC’s Akil Waite at the ever so chic Barcode Restaurant & bar in downtown DC was a must-go. They say all publicity is good publicity but Shonda Rhimes would probably beg to differ. With the season premiere of Scandal and the series premiere of How to Get Away With Murder quickly approaching, I’m pretty sure the television producer thought her name would on the lips of the media for reasons other than her being an “angry black woman”. That is exactly what Alessandra Stanley called her in an article in The New York Times. More Chatter

Since then her entrepreneurial spirit has taken her to even greater heights. I caught up with the author turned publisher and she shared how she jump started her career as an author, how she gives back and a few tidbits on getting your work published. Read more below. Yesterday TMZ released footage of what we all knew happened in the elevator between former Baltimore Raven’s player Ray Rice and his then fiancee, Janay Palmer, back in February. Although the couple later married and took equal blame in the elevator incident that initially caused Ray Rice to be suspended for 2 games, new video shows Rice striking Janay after a quarrel that left her unconscious.
The NFL, who says yesterday was their first time seeing footage of the actual physical abuse, suspended Rice indefinitely after the Baltimore Ravens released him. Whether that is true is what is being questioned by many. Did the NFL really not see the additional More Chatter
As much as we sympathize with Mike Brown’s mother, Leslie McSpadden, and the deceased teenager’s entire family, no one REALLY knows what they are going through like someone who experienced such an enormous tragedy first hand. Nicole Paultre Bell was to marry her fiancee, Sean Bell, on November 25, 2006 but he was killed just hours before they were to walk down the aisle. Sean died at the hands of police after he and two friends were shot at 50 times by undercover New York police officers.
I spoke to Nicole about the recent deaths of several unarmed Americans (most notably Mike Brown, Eric Garner and John Crawford, III) as a result of the overuse of police force. The grief and frustration that these families are feeling is all too familiar to her. More Chatter

The best way to bring about change is to be the change you want to see. Over a half dozen hip hop artists are doing just that with a song dedicated to Mike Brown. Rapper The Game talked about enlisting his counterparts to come together for the track.
“The issues in Ferguson really hit home for me, and I feel compelled to use my musical platform to address this,” the Game tells Rolling Stone. “I am a black man with kids of my own that I love more than anything, and I cannot fathom a horrific tragedy like Michael Brown’s happening to them. This possibility has shaken me to my core. That is why this song must be made and why it was so easy for so many of my friends to come together and unite against the injustice.” More Chatter
