Just because other people don’t see you talent or appeal doesn’t make it any less valuable. Sometimes it means you were meant to take your journey on a road less traveled. Getting someone to publish her first novel was difficult but April Sheris took that as a challenge to start her own publishing company. Since then her entrepreneurial spirit has taken her to even greater heights. I caught up with the author turned publisher and she shared how she jump started her career as an author, how she gives back and a few tidbits on getting your work published. Read more below. Yesterday TMZ released footage of what we all knew happened in the elevator between former Baltimore Raven’s player Ray Rice and his then fiancee, Janay Palmer, back in February. Although the couple later married and took equal blame in the elevator incident that initially caused Ray Rice to be suspended for 2 games, new video shows Rice striking Janay after a quarrel that left her unconscious.
The NFL, who says yesterday was their first time seeing footage of the actual physical abuse, suspended Rice indefinitely after the Baltimore Ravens released him. Whether that is true is what is being questioned by many. Did the NFL really not see the additional Continue reading
As much as we sympathize with Mike Brown’s mother, Leslie McSpadden, and the deceased teenager’s entire family, no one REALLY knows what they are going through like someone who experienced such an enormous tragedy first hand. Nicole Paultre Bell was to marry her fiancee, Sean Bell, on November 25, 2006 but he was killed just hours before they were to walk down the aisle. Sean died at the hands of police after he and two friends were shot at 50 times by undercover New York police officers.
I spoke to Nicole about the recent deaths of several unarmed Americans (most notably Mike Brown, Eric Garner and John Crawford, III) as a result of the overuse of police force. The grief and frustration that these families are feeling is all too familiar to her. Continue reading

The best way to bring about change is to be the change you want to see. Over a half dozen hip hop artists are doing just that with a song dedicated to Mike Brown. Rapper The Game talked about enlisting his counterparts to come together for the track.
“The issues in Ferguson really hit home for me, and I feel compelled to use my musical platform to address this,” the Game tells Rolling Stone. “I am a black man with kids of my own that I love more than anything, and I cannot fathom a horrific tragedy like Michael Brown’s happening to them. This possibility has shaken me to my core. That is why this song must be made and why it was so easy for so many of my friends to come together and unite against the injustice.” Continue reading
We talked about last night’s memorable moments but the fashion at the 2014 MTV Music Video Awards was just as memorable. Our faves looks were Nicki Minaj in her “Anaconda” inspired look, Chanel Iman in all of her dominatrix glory and Queen Bey in floor length lace.
Most of the celebs who hit the red carpet at The Forum nailed their looks but some are deserving of a serious side eye. Our least fave Continue reading

In the midst of the imposed curfew and more unsettling activity in Ferguson stemming from shooting of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, the preliminary autopsy of the teenager’s body was released as well as the name of the officer who killed him. The officer who has been identified as Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown a total of six times according to the autopsy performed by former chief medical examiner for the City of New York, Dr. Michael M. Baden. Dr. Baden, who flew in yesterday to conduct a separate autopsy at the request of Brown’s family says that two of the shots were to Brown’s head, one of which entered the top of his skull and was likely the final and fatal shot. The other four shots were in the victim’s right arm. Attorney Generals Eric H. Holder, Jr. confirmed that the Justice Department would conduct it’s own autopsy in addition to the ones conducted by local officials and the family due to “the extraordinary circumstances involved in this case and at the request of the Brown family.”

One of the greatest actors of the last 40 years has died. Robin Williams was found dead in his California home yesterday from an alleged suicide. However, the manner in which he died is contradictory to the impact he had on millions of people during his life. His wit and ability to bring laughter and joy was a gift that was enjoyed by people across the globe. With over 100 film and TV credits and a career spanning decades, there was no generational gap. From early supporters who watched him on “Mork & Mindy” in the late 70’s and in “Good Morning Vietnam” in the late 80’s to twenty somethings who grew up on 90’s films like “Hook”, “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Jumaji”, we all enjoyed Robin’s charismatic performances that Continue reading
